Perinteikäs urheilun yleisseura Helsingin Jyry on perustettu vuonna 1902 ja täyttää tänä vuonna 110 vuotta. Juhlavuoden kunniaksi Helsingin Jyry järjestää yhdessä Suomen urheiluhistoriallisen seuran ja Åbo Akademin kanssa urheiluhistoriallisen seminaarin, jossa tarkastellaan työväen urheilun historiaa osana yhteiskunnan muuta kehitystä.

Seminaari pidetään lauantaina 1. joulukuuta 2012 Helsingissä Tieteiden talossa, os. Kirkkokatu 6, 00170 Helsinki.

Helsingin Jyry on vanha työväen urheiluseura, ja sen 110-vuotinen toiminta peilaa sekä urheilun, urheiluliikkeen, työväenliikkeen, työväen urheiluliikkeen että koko suomalaisen yhteiskunnan historiaa. Niinpä on sopivaa, että Jyryn täyttäessä 110 vuotta, juhlavuonna järjestetään urheiluhistoriallinen seminaari, jossa tarkastellaan työväenurheiluliikkeen ja työväen urheiluseurojen vuorovaikutusta muun yhteiskunnan kanssa.

Avausesitelmöitsijä on Leena Laine, joka on muiden ansioidensa lisäksi kirjoittanut Helsingin Jyryn 75-vuotishistorian.

Esitelmien pituus on 20 minuuttia, ja kunkin esitelmän jälkeen varataan 10 minuutin aika keskustelulle. Seminaarin kieli on suomi (mutta myös ruotsin- ja englanninkielisiä esitelmiä voidaan hyvillä perusteilla hyväksyä). Vuoden 2012 apurahat ovat haettavissa ma 8.10.2012 klo 16 mennessä. Apurahat on tarkoitettu tutkimuksiin, jotka pyrkivät fyysiseen ja psyykkiseen suorituskykyyn vaikuttavien tekijöiden selvittämiseen. Pääpaino asetetaan nuorten, uransa alkuvaiheessa olevien tutkijoiden tukemiseen. Pekka Peltokallion rahastosta myönnetään lisäksi yksi apuraha urheiluvammatutkimukseen nuorelle lääkärille. Apurahat pyritään jakamaan liikuntalääketieteen päivillä Helsingissä marraskuussa.

Jukka Uunila – suomalainen urheiluvaikuttaja

Jukka Uunila on yksi merkittävimpiä urheilujohtajia viime sotien jälkeiseltä ajalta. Hän oli keskeisesti mukana SVUL:n toiminnassa yli 30 vuotta. Suomen Olympiakomiteassa hän vaikutti ensin varapuheenjohtajana ja myöhemmin puheenjohtajana yhteensä 20 vuotta. Suomen Urheiluliitossa hän oli puheenjohtajana 10 vuotta ja hallituksessa 24 vuotta.

Kirjan kirjoittaja on tietokirjailija ja toimittaja Antti O. Arponen, joka on ollut tekemässä yli 60 urheiluun liittyvää kirjaa.

Tehtävä Tukholmassa – Suomi olympiakisoissa 1912

Tukholman olympialaiset, ”päivänpaistekisat”, järjestettiin tasan 100 vuotta sitten. Tapahtuma oli autonomiselle Suomelle merkittävä niin urheilullisesti kuin poliittisesti. Hannes Kolehmaisen ja kumppanien saavutukset jäivät urheiluhistoriaan pysyvästi ja lippuselkkaus Venäjän kanssa toi Suomelle myötätuntoa kansainvälisesti.

Tehtävä Tukholmassa – teoksen kirjoittajat ovat Suomen Urheilumuseosäätiön nykyisiä tai entisiä työntekijöitä, jotka tuntevat hyvin Urheilumuseon, -arkiston ja -kirjaston laajan lähdeaineiston.

URHEILUMUSEON NÄYTTELYT

Merkki päällä – pesäpallo 90 vuotta

24.4.–26.8.2012

Urheilumuseon kesän vaihtuvassa näyttelyssä kerrotaan Suomen kansallispelin, pesäpallon, tarina. Lauri ”Tahko” Pihkala kehitti pesäpallon yhdistelemällä vanhojen pohjoismaisten lyöntipelien ja amerikkalaisen baseballin piirteitä. Pelin ensimmäiset viralliset säännöt vahvistettiin vuonna 1922.

Näyttelyssä käydään läpi pelin alkuvaiheet, sotavuodet, maakuntien joukkueiden nousu sekä 90-luvun ammattimaistuminen aina sopupelijupakan jälkeiseen uuteen tulemiseen. Vuosikymmenien ilmiöitä havainnollistetaan tekstein ja kuvin.

Kävijät voivat testata pesäpallotietojaan tietovisassa, jossa on kolme vaikeustasoa. Näyttelyssä pyörivät filmit kertovat, miten pesäpalloa pelattiin 1930-luvulla ja millaista peli on tänään.

Goals
The Grupo de História e Desporto (Group for History and Sport – GHD)
gathers researchers from several institutions, with the main goal of
promoting cooperation, research and studies in the field of sport history.
The GHD also organizes events for History and Sport at the national and
international levels. In the Portuguese case, the interest in the history
of sport is an important research focus. The GHD also organizes an annual
congress, whose goal is the discussion and the production of knowledge in
the various aspects of the intersection of history and sport. The theme for
the 2012 congress is the Olympics.

Subject
The year 2012 marks the XXX Summer Olympic Games in London. 2012 also
commemorates the centenary of Portugal’s first participation in the Olympic
Games (in Stockholm in 1912). To mark these two events the I Congress of
History and Sport will be dedicated to the Olympic movement and its
different perspectives, including sport, social, economic, political,
religious, media, culture and others.

*Call for papers*
We seek abstracts of no more than 500 words from persons interested in
participating in the I Congress of History and Sport. Please include three
key words related to your proposed paper, a brief curriculum vita, academic
affiliation and contact information (including email and telephone). Papers
can be presented in Portuguese, English, Spanish and French.

Suomen urheiluhistoriallisen seuran vuosikokous pidetään tiistaina 27.3.2012 klo 17.00 alkaen Tieteiden talolla, Kirkkokatu 6, Helsinki. Kokouksen jälkeen klo 18 seuraa FT Lauri Keskisen esitelmä: Tekikö seura kaltaisekseen? Työväenurheiluseura opettavana organisaationa 1900-luvun alussa.

Alkanut vuosi 2012 on jälleen kesäolympiavuosi, ja se tulee näkymään myös Suomen urheiluhistoriallisen seuran vuosikirjan sisällössä. Tulemme syventämään ja kertaamaan Tukholman olympialaisten tapahtumia sadan vuoden takaa ja pureutumaan muutenkin kansainvälisen kilpaurheilun ytimeen. Tätäkin aihetta jo avattiin edellisessä vuosikirjassa.

Otamme vastaan tutkimusartikkeleita, vapaita tai essee-tyyppisiä kirjoituksia, kirja-arvosteluja, seminaariraportteja sekä keskustelupuheenvuoroja. Artikkeleiden suosituspituus on 8-12 sivua, kirja-arvostelujen 2-3 sivua.

Redaktionen mottar även bidrag på svenska. Till årsboken kan ges bidrag i form av vetenskapliga artiklar (som kan genomgå referee-förfarande om så önskas), esseäer, bokrecensioner, seminarierapporter och diskussionsinlägg.

Call for Papers: Sport and other Leisure Industries Special Edition of Sport in History

We are seeking articles for a special edition of the journal Sport in History that examines the relationship between sport and other leisure and/or cultural industries.

Although sport’s distinctiveness as a form of leisure, due to its emphases on physicality and competitiveness, is undeniable, the study of sports history has become somewhat ghettoised from other aspects of leisure history. Moreover, while the cultural turn in sports history has encouraged a new emphasis on texts and their representation of sport, less attention has been devoted to the wider commercial configurations that have promoted sport’s appropriation by, and of, other leisure and cultural forms. This special edition will therefore seek to partially redress this gap by showcasing research that examines sport’s place within the broader entertainment business. Our aim is to encourage a dialogue between sports historians and social and cultural historians working in other areas and disciplines.

As such, we are particularly keen to receive articles on the history of sport’s relationship with culture and leisure industries, especially where these links have been hitherto relatively unexplored.
For example, how has sport as a business compared to or interacted with publishing, the fairground, theatre, cinema, shopping for pleasure, music, etc? We welcome papers covering a diverse range of historical periods, including the recent past (providing they offer a suitably historical perspective), and geographical contexts, both British and non-British.

The issues that suitable articles could cover include (but are not limited to):

How have entrepreneurs and show-people utilised and sought to capitalise on sport?
How have sportspeople, clubs and governing bodies utilised and sought to capitalise on the culture industry?
Has sport’s relationship with other culture and leisure industries transformed the nature of either or both?

The relationship between labour issues in sport and other culture and leisure industries.

The nature of competition and co-operation between sport and other leisure industries

Comparative studies between sports and other leisure industries.

Relationships between sport and other culture and leisure industries at a local level.

Relationships between sport and other leisure industries at a transnational level.

The 30th Annual Conference of the British Society of Sports History, will take place Friday and Saturday, 7-8 September 2012. The conference will take place at the University of Glasgow, based in the scenic West End of the city.

The conference will be open-themed. Papers should be a maximum of 20 minutes in length with ten minutes for questions and discussion. Ideas for Specialist Panels will also be strongly encouraged.

Abstracts should be no longer than 200 words and should be sent to The Conference Committee (email: bssh2012(AT)gmail.com) by Thursday, 5 April 2012.

We would also strongly encourage postgraduates to submit abstracts. The Richard W. Cox Postgraduate Prize will be awarded for the best paper presented by a postgraduate student. Please indicate when you submit your abstract if you wish to be considered for this award.

The conference will receive the Sir Derek Birley Annual Memorial Lecture and a special lecture from the most recent winners of The Lord Aberdare Book Prize.
